Terroir NLV

grapes.jpgTerroir (Tear-Wah ): A French term used in wine making, which may be interpreted in many ways, but a basic definition is “the coming together of the climate, the soil and the landscape”. Concerning a particular vineyard, terroir comprises the local factors that enable the growing of the best fruit and which makes its wine distinctive.

Main & Plain Defines Us

For us the main & plain mean sticking with the main things that are taught in scripture, and the things that are plainly taught in scripture.

The main & plain defines our priorities, values, our vision and purpose (why New Life Vineyard exists), and the way we “do church”.

God hates the present condition of the world, and the influence which the enemy of God, Satan, has over people. But through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, God launched a divine invasion to overthrow evil, and established his loving and powerful rule, His Kingdom in the world.

Jesus is our primary model and we will seek to do all the stuff that he did and commanded us to do. This includes casting out demons, healing the sick, saving people who are lost and bringing them to an intimate relationship with God. And then disciples are to make disciples.

Culturally Relevant to Singapore

We want to be “culturally relevant” and accordingly plan for a casual contemporary atmosphere in our meetings so that people at all stages of life can feel as ease when they visit.

At our meetings, there is no hype, just sincere praise and worship. And practical and relevant messages which relate to everyday living, marriage, work, and finances. Messages to help you succeed in the way God has intended.

Since God desires us to make him our highest priority, our greatest challenge lies in the perception that it does not pay to be too committed to Jesus. This is because Singapore is a country where hard work pays all too well. Success and the good life (education, a job, home, and excellent medical care) can be got if you set your mind to it and apply yourself.

So we have set out to demonstrate the reality, power and love of God. The other things are good, but God’s grace and favor is better, and a relationship of intimacy and trust with God is best!

Having said all of that, presently there are five traits and flavors which we, at Terroir NLV, seek to exhibit. They are:

Intimacy with God
Being relational
Naturally supernatural
Everyone gets to play
Valuing people

Vineyard Family of Churches

New Life Vineyard relates to the family of churches known as the Vineyard.

The Vineyard is a diverse group of churches that partner together to advance the Kingdom of God by communicating the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The movement was founded by John Wimber. We are one of over a thousand Vineyard churches worldwide. Vineyard USA celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2008.

Lye Heng and Susan Choo were originally part of Vineyard Community Church, Singapore led by Pastors Stuart and Nancy Gurnea, and they had served under them as intern pastors.

Stuart was commissioned on 20th October 2002 in a service officiated by Brian and Thora Anderson, Senior Pastors, North Phoenix Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

Lye Heng and Susan were in turn commissioned and sent out by VCC on 8th January 2005 to plant another Vineyard church in Singapore, which we have named, New Life Vineyard!

What Does New Life Mean to Us?
There are many promising references to the new life in the Bible.

For instance, Ezra 9:9. He has granted us new lives to build the house of our God, and repairs its ruins. This verse speaks to us about the primary place of worship and prayer.

New Life, for intimacy with our Father.

Accordingly, worship and prayer are our highest priorities.

Then Acts 5:20 says, Tell the people the full message of this new life. Importantly, this reminds us of our purpose to proclaim the good news of Jesus and the kingdom of God. And to us, the “full message” means speaking of the kingdom, and doing the works of the kingdom!

Saving lives, delivering the oppressed, casting out demons and healing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Making disciples. That’s what we really want to be focused on!

New Life to obey Jesus and do everything that He has done!

Finally, Romans 5:17, which speaks of God’s abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness, which came to reign in our (new) lives.

Here we have an awesome contrast: If by the sin of Adam, death reigned through that one man, how much more the “goodness” of God, will reign in our lives through the obedience of Jesus! As grace abounds to us, we shall continue to abound in good works, especially works of mercy. And we love because he first loved us.

New Life to demonstrate God’s grace and favor!
