Worship ministry startup
Dear Lydia, Sabrina, Victor, Shawn and Dawn are on the roster to lead worship at the Young Professionals house church meetings. We are so grateful to Dawn for her help with the present team and providing technical input and encouraging us all. Some pictures taken during practice last week are posted below.
Thanks for the help, Dawn …is your head hurting?
Lye Heng actually sat in on the first meeting of the “worship team” when they came together a couple of weeks ago. Dawn basically asked everyone to speak their feelings.
We agreed to record what was expressed as this would be useful means for everyone to know each other better:-
Shawn enjoy/feels comfortable with playing the acoustic guitar; as for singing, in tenor and harmony (?).
Lydia: Vocals (sopranos); bongo drums.
Sabrina: Keyboards; Singing (Alto) and as backup.
Victor: Guitar, lead worship (although not done for the last 4 years); ebanas pickup (?), solo, scales (?).
What is your misconception about worship? What do you like to see in a worship session? The collective answers were:
Have fun!
Enjoy God’s presence
Praise God
Unified expression
Hunger
Genuine desire
Bring people close to God
Help them understand God’s love for them
Make an impact in their lives
Hearts must be open to god for message to sink in
Feeling God’s presence so that our hearts open up
Means for drawing us closer to God
Waiting upon God
Freedom and intimacy
Sensing what God wants to do
Sensitivity to God’s will
COLLABORATION is a high value. Accordingly, getting to know each others’ aspirations is important (see above) and concerns as well (see below):
It seems to us that almost everyone was not entirely confident (or even lacking confidence) about his or her ability or “rightness” to lead worship; everyone wanted to acquire more technical ability/skills: in choosing songs, song arrangements, to sing and play better, to do it smoothly and confidently.
On housekeeping issues:-
Roster: 1st week – Dawn, 2nd – Lydia, 3rd – Sabrina, 4th – Shawn, and 5th – Victor.
Worship sets: Leader to release 1 week in advance
Practice: Do it on your own; as a group at 1.30 pm; keep it simple & stress free
The group’s present focus is leading worship at the Young Professionals’ meetings. But everone knows Lye Heng’s open agenda and hope: in coming together to play – jamming, getting to know each other better, having fun and enjoying the ensuing activities, more people will want to become a part of this Fellowship’s worship ministry. (In fact dear Anthony has now volunteered to play the guitar, rhythm or bass. It’s a well-kept secret that he used to play bass guitar for a band, the SAF Music and Drama Company, during his NS days!)
There is an article at Inside Worship, which provides tips on “Making Sense of Worship” from a church planter’s perspective, if you are in our kind of situation.
